Love the songs but it too scary for young kids December 30, 2008 This is not a movie for younger kids. It's actually rather scary and my daughter was crying out for her mum AND dad both when it got too much. They have made the evil muse and the serpent too scary and the music that plays when you see them are too scary for young kids too. Those things combined sent my daughter crying quite a few times during the movie while she cluthed to us like crazy. For some reason she still wanted to finish watching the movie and I couldn't do anything but pitty her for it. The poor thing adores the movie and just tries to be brave.
We have almost all of the barbie movies now and I can truly recommend the 12 dancing princesses and the island princess. The diamond castle especially, but also the nutcracker, the pegasus, fairy mariposa, and a bit also a chrismas' carrol feels as they're more aimed for older kids than 4 or maybe even 5 year olds. Either they were hard for my daughter to understand, too scary or failed to compell her. The nutcracker, a christmas' carrol and mariposa compelled her the least, and this from a barbie crazy girl!
Seriously think twice before buying this to young kids no matter how much you think they'd love it. Buy the music cd for the movie or the toys for it if you have to buy anything. The songs for the film are truly wonderful and shouldn't be missed.
Great songs, great film November 3, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Another great Barbie film and addition to the collection, the songs were quite poppy and very catchy and as usual there is a clear moral to the story. My daughter loved it and can't wait for Christmas Carol to come out!
Good heavens September 21, 2008 Just watched this and it's the usual fantastic Barbie quality with songs that High School Musical should have stolen ! I'm afraid some element of threat in a good verses bad storyline is inevitable (re. the previous review), I'm afraid it's just part of training for life. It's a Barbie video for goodness sake, it makes Disney stuff look evil !
I doubt this will ever be watched again September 20, 2008 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
I bought this Barbie movie at the insistence of my Barbie mad little girls. They love the Barbie Movies and I thought this one would be the same. However as much as it looks cute and pretty and innocent it sometimes isn't. It had one of my girls in tears absolutely terrified of the Evil Muse. Even I was shocked at some of the things included in the Movie, such as casting a spell over one of the main character Barbie's and telling her to walk of a cliff, which isn't something you would expect in a movie aimed at little girls. Most of the rest of the story is okay and there are light hearted jokes for adults to enjoy that is if your child isn't in tears. I doubt that my girls will ever watch this movie again. It certainly is much darker than that of 12 Dancing Princesses and Island Princess. I wouldn't recommend it.
Another good Barbie Movie September 10, 2008 I bought this for my 5 year old daughter and so far she has watched it 4 times in 3 days. I have to say, I can't fault Barbie movies. They always have great stories which girls love and aren't too painful for the adults to watch either. Barbie and her friend Theresa play Alexa and Liana who are best friends who go on a quest to find the diamond castle to rescue a girl stuck in a mirror by an evil muse. It's a story of friendship (with what I can't help thinking is a bit of a gay undertone to an adult). Suzanne Shaw of Hearsay / Dancing on Ice fame sings the end song and the music video is included on the DVD in the UK. As usual there are all the dolls and accessories to buy to accompany this movie. Flying horses and the little girls make an appearance at the end of the movie for a brief time (presumably so they can sell these too).
