5 out of 5 stars Useful from about age 2 upwards, Stopped the power struggle for us!   February 2, 2008

Before I read this book, I was desperate. My 2 year old was driving me bonkers. It was a constant power struggle. This book took me some time (roughly 2 months) to implement the changes within myself and our relationship, but I started with the first step. I stopped smacking!

Smacking was the reason I decided to invest in parenting books because, from my culture smacking is the solution to all deciplinary problems. Spare the rod and spoil the child. I however noticed that what was intially an extreme disciplinary measure had now become the first measure, whatever my excuses were. I wasn't happy about this so I decided to see about other options because I didn't want to go down this route, I recognised that my upbringing was what had given me these ideas and I didn't know any other way so I needed to learn new ways.

With my new knowledge and understanding we have a much better bond and I have a different way of dealing with "misbehaviour" and also more considerate about his side of things so am more fair. 2 months on, am very pleased!!!

5 out of 5 stars A priceless insight into raising healthy sons!   April 2, 2000

I couldn't put this book down! Anyone that knows a boy or man let alone raising one should read this. It's clear understanding and explanations of male behaviour made so much sense and offered solutions and stragegies for helping our son's through the struggle to be an adult. It speaks about men who may not have recieved the guidance and nurturing they needed from their fathers and how to heal and grow with their own son. An absolute must-read!

This book really helped me learn how some of the things I don't understand about men are biochemical in nature. Testosterone is a very powerful drug. As our sons mature, some of the behaviors that they exhibit are directly attributed to these hormones. The authors describe the physical and emotional processes boys go through to become men and identify with their gender. I found it most illuminating. They also give lots of information on how to get your son to harness his energies in a productive manner and how to help him do so if he does not already.
