Like a complex wine, this book impressed itself upon me in stages. First there was the visual appeal: the art work glows, the paper is of high quality, and the price is reasonable for a coffee table book in a portable size. Second, I looked again and found that the anecdotes and history were as classic as the artwork. Then I read more carefully and appreciated what I learned about the wines of Champagne, but I took it as whimsy. Finally I settled down to serious reading and discovered things about the winemaking process and human health that were new and intriguing. I mean, who knew that Champagne's lithium content contributed to its antidepressant powers?
The book was prepared lovingly - the authors know their stuff and no doubt drink it too. This is the sort of book one buys as a gift and then goes back and buys for oneself, or vice versa. David W. Bodenberg

Now that's what I call ageing well - champagne is now good for you! (in moderation of course). This book is the best news I have had in a long time.
Definitely worth a read if you're a fan of the bubbly stuff.

So the drunks and the teetotallers have all got it wrong - champagne isn't a drug, it's also one of the most under-rated and classy health tonics on the market. (though the good doctor does say you have to drink it right for its healing powers to work - but I always knew I felt better after a glass and now I know why....

I knew it! Finally someone, and not just someone, but THREE medical doctors confirming what I always suspected - that the champagne that makes you feel so good can't be all bad for you! On the contrary, Doctor Tran Ky goes into the science, the art and the illustrious history of champagne to demonstrate why this beverage is so highly prized, and also why a glass of lovely bubbly a day complies with the philosophy of 'savoir vivre'. This translation reads beautifully, is erudite, witty and punctuated by lots of quotes in praise of champagne and all its glory, including a fair bit of one-liner wisdom from Winston Churchill who loved a bubbly glass now and then and again. It is also beautifully illustrated and full of charm - definintely on the christmas stocking list for all of those difficult to buy for uncles, dads and husbands. and of course the ladies because champers is most definitelywritten in the feminine and a lady's drink of choice if she knows what's good for her..!
